Dramatic Landscapes
with
Roger Parsons

Dramatic paintings rely on dramatic lighting and dynamic compositions.
We’ll study the contribution of dramatic lighting to landscape compositions, ie, the arrangement of light and dark values and the color and angle of the sun.
We’ll explore which type of lighting best conveys the subject.
Students will use their own photographs or from the instructor’s collection (no other sources, nor photos of paintings by others).

The goal is a painting that is your translation and representation of nature, which is much better than any photo.

Individual attention and mentoring tailored to each artist's abilities.

Sunrise and sunset provide colored light at low angles, which yields long/strong shadows. Mid-day scenes lean more on the angle of the light on the subject.

Sunrise/early morning, sunset late/afternoon photos usually work best for some subjects, mid-day sun works best. Consider backlight, front light, or sidelight.
