Seeing Value
with
Holly White-Gehrt

"Value does the work, color gets the credit." Have you heard that before? Value is undervalued! Seeing value is seeing light.

In this workshop, you will gain a strong grasp of the difference between global value and local value. We will use two different techniques which are ideal for developing value structures.

First we will analyze a Master Work to discern the value shapes that the master artist used. With cut paper of five discrete values, we will reconstruct the value structure of the master work. This will give us significant insight into the composition and help understand how composition is largely created by global values.

Secondly, we will use what we call at TXHCA the "Tenaya Technique," which employs both charcoal and graphite on toned paper to arrive at value structure quickly.

Understanding how light falls across form is the key to creating a three dimensional illusion.

Value areas are design shapes that express the object in space.
